What happens when you enlist?
The first step to participate in the factional warfare is to enlist your character. But before we do that, let's take a look at what exactly happens when you are enlisted:
You will be able to participate in FW-related activities such as running and gaining rewards for completing the complexes scattered across FW low-sec systems,
You will be in a state of war with enemy militia pilots (Gallente vs Caldari, Minmatar vs Amarr). That means that you can fight and be engaged in any security space by your adversaries without CONCORD / Gate guns intervening,
You will be pursued by hostile NPCs in hi-sec systems of the enemy faction. While they do not have warp disruptors fitted, they have enough DPS and energy neutralizers to quickly dispatch any unprepared ship,
You will not be able to dock in NPC stations in low-sec systems held by the enemy faction with frontline systems being the exception. Player structures are unaffected by this.
How do you enlist?
There are two ways to join factional warfare - either by joining a player corporation that is already enlisted or via direct enlistment. Both options have their pros and cons that will be covered in the next sections.
Joining an enlisted corporation
This one is simple, as there are no pre-requirements to do it - as long as the corporation is happy to have you on board, you do not need to have the necessary faction standings to participate in the FW.
On the negative side, you are perpetually locked in the FW for as long as you are a member of that corporation or the directors decide to unenlist the entire organization from the FW.
Joining via direct enlistment
Direct enlistment offers greater freedom at the cost of standings requirements - you need positive standings respective faction (Gallente Federation, Amarr Empire etc.) without any modifiers (such as Diplomacy skill) affecting it. This shouldn't be an issue for most of the players but those on intensive mission grind can have their options limited. On the plus side, you can drop your enlisted status at any time, giving you more options if you are limited to one character or if you simply want to try some other activities without changing your corporation. There is a 24-hour timer before you can re-enlist.
How to enlist?
Open your Neocom (the 'E' icon on the top of your menu) and navigate to Activities -> Factional Warfare. Alternatively, click on the Factional Warfare icon when you are docked in an NPC station.
In the bottom-left corner of the screen that was opened, select the faction that you would like to enlist with. If you are not docked in a station belonging to that faction, you will be directed to the closest viable station.
When docked in the correct station, open the Factional Warfare menu again. This time you will be offered an option to enlist yourself. Click the button to finish the enlistment process.
Congratulations, you are now a proud member of the militia. Future blog posts will cover how to contribute to the ongoing war effort.
